title: How to configure Pure-Go SSH, Git LFS, and commit signatures
description: Connect to exist.io via port 2222 SSH, track large assets with Git LFS, and verify cryptographic commit signatures.
---

exist.io ships with an embedded, zero-cgo pure-Go SSH server on port `2222` alongside an RFC-compliant Git Large File Storage (LFS) v1 Batch engine and cryptographic commit signature verification.

## Step 1: Connect using Pure-Go SSH

The SSH server runs natively inside the `existd` process without requiring OpenSSH host daemons or external sshd configurations.

### Clone over SSH

```bash
# SSH URL format
git clone ssh://git@<host>:2222/<namespace>/<repo-name>.git
# Example: clone local enterprise repository
git clone ssh://git@localhost:2222/acme/my-service.git
```

### Configure SSH Client (`~/.ssh/config`)

To simplify authentication across daily terminal workflows, add an entry to your `~/.ssh/config`:

```text
Host exist.internal
    HostName git.corp.exist.io
    Port 2222
    User git
    IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_ed25519
```

Then clone cleanly:

```bash
git clone git@exist.internal:acme/my-service.git
```

### Enroll Developer SSH Keys

Users can register public keys via the Web UI (**Account Settings → SSH Keys**) or programmatically using the REST API:

```bash
curl -X POST http://localhost:8080/api/v1/user/ssh-keys \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer <your-session-or-api-token>" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "name": "MacBook Pro Ed25519",
    "publicKey": "ssh-ed25519 AAAAC3NzaC1lZDI1NTE5AAAAIGx... dev@corp.exist.io"
  }'
```

---

## Step 2: Track large binaries with Git LFS

exist.io provides full support for the **Git LFS v1 Batch HTTP API** (`/info/lfs/objects/batch`), streaming upload/download verification with SHA-256 Content-Addressable Storage (CAS), and binary file locking.

### Install and initialize Git LFS

```bash
# Verify Git LFS is installed
git lfs version
# Install hooks into local repository
cd my-service
git lfs install
```

### Track large file extensions

```bash
# Track design assets, weights, model checkpoints, and archives
git lfs track "*.psd"
git lfs track "*.onnx"
git lfs track "*.tar.gz"
# Stage the .gitattributes tracking definitions
git add .gitattributes
git commit -m "chore: track large models and assets with Git LFS"
```

### Push LFS objects

When executing `git push`, the Git LFS pre-push hook automatically queries the exist.io Batch endpoint, uploads binary payloads directly to Content-Addressable Storage, and verifies SHA-256 checksums:

```bash
git add models/weights.onnx
git commit -m "feat: add fine-tuned agent weights"
git push origin main
```

### Binary file locking (RFC Locking Protocol)

Prevent merge conflicts on unmergeable binary assets by acquiring locks before editing:

```bash
# Lock a file
git lfs lock models/weights.onnx
# List active repository locks
git lfs locks
# Unlock when finished
git lfs unlock models/weights.onnx
```

---

## Step 3: Cryptographic commit signature verification

exist.io automatically inspects and validates cryptographic commit signatures on all inbound pushes. Both **OpenSSH SIGSPEC** and **GPG (OpenPGP RFC 4880)** signatures are supported.

### Sign commits with SSH (Recommended)

Configure Git to sign commits using your existing SSH key:

```bash
git config --global gpg.format ssh
git config --global user.signingkey ~/.ssh/id_ed25519.pub
git config --global commit.gpgsign true
```

### Sign commits with GPG

```bash
git config --global user.signingkey <YOUR_GPG_KEY_ID>
git config --global commit.gpgsign true
```

### Verify signatures in the Web UI

When browsing commit history in the exist.io Web UI:
1. Navigate to your repository → **Commits**.
2. Signed commits display a **Verified (SSH)** or **Verified (GPG)** badge.
3. Click the badge to open the cryptographic verification inspection drawer. It displays:
   - **Signature Format**: `OpenSSH SIGSPEC (ssh-ed25519)` or `GPG (RFC 4880)`.
   - **Verification Status**: `VERIFIED (Cryptographically Valid)`.
   - **Signer Identity**: Verified committer email.
   - **Public Key Fingerprint**: SHA-256 fingerprint matching the user's enrolled public key.

---

## Step 4: Enforce signed commits in branch rulesets

To mandate that every commit merged into `main` must carry a cryptographically verified signature:

1. Open your repository → **Rulesets & Policy**.
2. Click **Branch Protection: main**.
3. Toggle **Require Signed Commits** to active.
4. All subsequent `git push` or PR merge attempts without valid cryptographic signatures will be rejected deterministically by the policy engine.
